    Meh, I would have emptied the dead bugs on a plate out on the patio - shown them - then lit the plate on fire. Picked up some of these nightmares either at a restaurant, the doctor's office, or riding the bus - my second infestation in around 2.5 years. I went 44.5 years of life blissfully unaware of these Hellish demons. Five infestations in 7.5 years isn't bad reading some of the horror stories out there, but with invasion and the loss, once was enough to add another element to the CPTSD. These aren't roaches, ants, spiders, centipedes, or the like - these diabolical fiends are insidious predators and we're the prey. It plays havoc on the whole we're the apex predator angle of things. Oh sure, there are things out there that can hurt and kill us - wild animals, air, land, and sea - oh, they can get us unprepared - but prepared, we'd slaughter them. Bed bugs though - at what point do we unleash the nukes to incinerate the planet and bring an end to this blight upon the very fabric of our existence even as doing such will be our own demise??? Okay, recent encounter with bed bugs rant over. Hrmm, I see that the temp's in the ~120-145 range there, and that's got me a bit concerned about prolonged exposure for stuff in the ZappBug Room. From what I've seen, the books are good even at the ~135+ range. But I've read that's not the case for comic books, but I couldn't find an elaboration, meh. There was a lot of talk about removing batteries, but since you dropped the laptop in with the battery in place - I'm guessing the battery warning is for Heavy Duty/Akaline/NI-CD and so forth but not for lithium (even though we're always hearing about that stuff going boom and starting fires, right?). I read no prescriptions, and that's cool, can take the mini-LED flashlight to each bottle to do the paranoid scan before dropping those in bags to put aside while the chemical treatment's being done. Clothes work better spread out and not clumped up - would it be better to bag up clothes and just run them until they fit Barbie & Ken dolls in the dryer so that the stuff going in the ZappBug Room serves as the grand stage for the primal execution of these invading forces where no quarter shall be given? Yeah, if I remember, I'll totally report back on how the incident goes - I wonder if they'll let me throw the switch....

    We put packing tape 3 levels around all/any post at bottoms of all/any furniture they bed bugs cannot climb the tape. Bed post, tables, chairs, dresses ect. We also did a line of packing tape all walls below outlets. Lastly we did tape in all closets 3 diff layers prior to doing the earth. We are not bug free because neighbors but we dont get bit and see the odd bug lost and hungry. We kill it. We have nothing on our floors or touches walls. It is entirely a lifestyle change

    I think I recently got a few unwelcome hitchhikers from work and brought them home so I'm grateful for videos like this. It seems odd its harmless to touch or taste but dangerous on breathing. I want to apply this to a foam mattress under the liner but afraid of laying over it and breathing it in with just a liner and cover sheet in between; I assume laying on it and moving would disturb it. Does it wear out and need to be cleaned/replaced over time?

  • @famoushollywood

    I've heard so many conflicting things on diatomaceous earth. Like that while it isn't toxic, you should wear a mask when applying and if it gets disturbed it can still create dust in the air causing problems to you. I've kind of stepped away from wanting to use this in places other than inside the walls. I'd be worried about it being on the bed itself.

      Cutting drugs with it would be the worst as that means folks would be intentionally inhaling it. Good ventilation where and when you sleep should make it a non issue....an example would be to not stir it up or agitate it before bed.

Would you know if its safe for small dogs? I know there exist a biodegradable option as you've mentioned, but not sure how to go about it with our maltese (He mostly sleep on the floor in one of his beds)... would you know if its okay to use and for him to breathe it in after spreading it out?

    • @charoleawood
      @charoleawood Год назад

      I have cats and worry about their breathing it in too. However, I've been frequently spreading diatomaceous earth around and the cats don't seem harmed by it. It's something you have to keep up with though, along with vacuuming and regular cleaning. Also, don't allow the diatomaceous earth to pile in clumps, use a hand broom to sweep and spread the powder around evenly and finely.

      Lots of people on RUclips comments saying to spread it out and not leave clumps, why is the girl in the video showing big ish clumps and saying it’s fine/should be like that? Or is that just because she’s referring to making a barrier? And not to actually have them crawl through them and die? Hoping mine aren’t too clumpy. I also accidentally poured way too much on the floor below my bed frame and I’m scared breathing it in now….

      @@britaneymiller3893 tbh I slept on a mattress and spread it around. I put a mask on for a night. Worked. I spread it around the sleeping area, then around the house and they stopped sucking on my blood. I bought 7 cloth organizers and put washed and ironed cloths in here, closed them off. All materials put in organizers + DE + steam + ironing do the job just for now.

      I may have went overboard and had pretty thick piles and didn’t *fully* spread it out, but did some. I didn’t realize until after that people were saying to really brush it into the carpet. Hopefully it’ll be fine? Did you have any issues with breathing it in since you did larger piles rather than spreading it out?

    • @FemaleGarfield
      @FemaleGarfield 7 месяцев назад

      @britaneymiller3893 No issues with breathing at all, it's actually considered safe to breathe usually but dust can be an irritant if you're directly breathing it in

    Panty hose won't keep the DE dust from the internals of the vacuum cleaner. It would be like putting up a chain link fence to keep out mosquitoes. Instead, use a shop vac. If you find you have bed bugs, now would be a good time to paint.

    While I agree that it is VERY important to deal with the molding and carpeting under it, in order to prevent bed bugs from colonizing your walls, it may not be possible to use calking compound if you are living in a rental. Instead, I recommend using Harris powder under the molding. You can use their dispenser to get under the molding. and use a small paint brush to brush in the powder into the carpeting. It will kill the bed bugs many months even after it is applied. Make sure you also do this on the electrical plugs by taking off the covers and squirting it into the walls. I like the idea of applying a seal. But not everyone can do this. Sanjosemike (no longer in CA)

    I am 26 years as a pest controller, been dealing with bedbugs since about the year 2000 when they began to reappear. If you want to DIY, I always suggest to people that ask to use a dust formulation (over the counter sprays are not as good. Most are pyrethroid material such as Deltamethrin which bedbugs are more tolerant of). DE is a great choice for DIY, bedbugs will not grow tolerant of this material. I say be thorough as possible. Invest in a good flashlight and a duster. Strip down your bed and flip over your mattress and box spring. Thoroughness will only increase your chances of success. Dusting takes practice and the right touch, this is a reason pest controllers have full time jobs.

      I would not suggest this. DE has sharp edges which tear soft exoskeleton of the bedbugs and causes desiccation. If you clump the DE together this may lessen the material's effectiveness. If you want to use Boric acid as a paste as folks do with cockroaches you can try it. But using a duster is more economical and less noticeable.

    I have been reading some of the other writeups online. It is very silly. They have this problem with setting lethality at 113, 118, 120 degrees for unmanageable lengths of time. Water turns to steam at 212 F degrees. That temp will kill bed bugs very quickly, less than a few seconds. Sequester away anything that might be damaged and go to town with any appliance that shoots a strong stream of steam and then repeat where you think they are hiding. If you have a steam mop, use it without accessories and keep refilling. Seal the items (books?) you think might be infested in plastic bags and leave in the sun for a few days or just leave them sealed up for a while and check later. This is a good article to start with.
